Process and Requirements

Process and Requirements There is a saying in the IT industry that "a fool with a tool is still a fool." This statement certainly applies to IT Governance (ITG) solutions. Automating a business process that has not been tailored to the maturity and capabilities of an organization is often worse that not automating it at all.

  • Business process owners don't accept ownership for a process they did not influence and optimize.
  • Functional stakeholders resist the changes to their day-to-day activities and tasks.
  • Management gets frustrated when they don't see return on their ITG tool investment.

Serving as the solution architect, ISM uses a proven workshop-based methodology in defining integrated ITIL and COBIT-based processes customized for the unique needs of the client. These process definition workshops are generally 4 hours in length and typically require 2 to 3 workshops for each process. Workshops are supported by “strawman” PowerPoint decks that both educate the participants and facilitate effective decision making.

This workshop-based approach focuses on the definition of requirements, business rules, data attributes, integration requirements, metrics, reporting requirements, and the matching of these requirements to the client’s selected tool set. ISM has successfully facilitated the integration of ITIL and COBIT-based processes with a number of software solutions, including CA (Clarity), HP (Project and Portfolio Management Center (PPM)), and Compuware (Changepoint®).

Throughout the initiative, ISM performs training and mentoring of process managers on the governance processes and the inter-relationships to other IT business processes.
